Second Call for Participants: STREAM ON CRITICAL THEORY AND EDUCATION
6th International Critical Theory Conference of Rome
2nd CFP Deadline: 28th February 2013

We still welcome submissions for the Critical Theory and Education Stream (original cfp below) until the end of February. Please note that we have received a number of abstracts that are concerned with Benjamin’s pedagogical ideas and are therefore particularly keen for papers which will explore other aspects of critical theory and education.

Please submit a one-page abstract of your proposal, including relevant institutional affiliations and contact details, as an attachment by email to the stream coordinator Matthew Charles at M.Charles1@westminster.ac.uk.

Original Call for Participants:
The contemporary crisis of education poses new challenges and opportunities for the politics, theory, and practice of a radical and critical pedagogy. In keeping with Walter Benjamin’s own concept of history, such a crisis also retrospectively illuminates the profound pedagogical context of the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School.

This stream on ‘Critical Theory and Education’ aims to bring together those interested in critical theory and critical pedagogy in order to assess the legacy and continuing productivity of theories of education influenced by (but not limited to) the work of Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse.

We particular welcome contributions dealing with theoretical and practical tensions within and between their works, considerations of the broader historical and pedagogical context of their ideas, and reflections on the practical application of their theory.

Although the exact format of the panels will depend upon the papers and participants involved, the intention is to encourage shorter presentations as part of a roundtable discussion, in order to foster and encourage productive conversation and critical debate.

Registration:

The conference is free, open to all and there is no need to pre-register. Attendance on each day will be allocated on a “first come, first served” basis: the registration desk will be open on Friday 31st May from 13:15 – 14:00 and on Saturday 1st June from 9:45 – 10:30 and will be located in the main entrance hall to the University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, London W1b 2UW.

The conference proceedings will begin at 14:00 on Friday and at 10:30 on Saturday and will end at 17:00 on both days. All talks will be held in Fyvie Hall (off the main entrance hall to the University of Westminster building on Regent Street).
